Porsche is accelerating its retreat from peripheral electric vehicle ventures. Following its withdrawal from Croatian EV startup Rimac, the Stuttgart-based sports car maker has now announced the closure of Cellforce, its battery cell subsidiary that was originally set up to develop high-performance cells for motorsport and performance EVs.
The shutdown will cost around 50 remaining employees their jobs. Cellforce had already been significantly scaled back in recent months, and the latest decision signals that Porsche sees no viable path to profitability for the unit in the current market environment.
Beyond batteries, Porsche is also discontinuing its e-bike drivetrain division and winding down Cetitec, a software subsidiary that had been tasked with supporting the group's digital development efforts. Together, these moves represent a notable contraction in Porsche's broader electrification portfolio.
The decisions reflect a wider trend among European automakers reassessing the scope of their in-house EV technology investments amid slowing EV sales growth and mounting cost pressures. For the European battery technology ecosystem, the closure of a specialized high-performance cell developer is a tangible setback.
