Four European countries broke their all-time daily solar generation records in the final days of May 2026, according to an analysis by Spanish energy consultancy Aleasoft Energy Forecasting. On 28 May, Germany generated 503 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of solar power in a single day — a new national record. France reached 179 GWh on the same day, while Spain set its record at 265 GWh and Portugal at 32 GWh on 29 May.
A record-breaking week for European solar
Impact on wholesale electricity prices
On the gas side, TTF futures settled at a weekly low of 45.43 €/MWh on 25 May before climbing to 47.47 €/MWh the next day, closing the week at 46.00 €/MWh — 5.5% lower than the previous week. Aleasoft noted that expectations of a US–Iran deal kept TTF below 50 €/MWh, though low European gas storage levels and heat-driven demand limited further price drops. For the coming week, the consultancy expects average power prices to rise in most markets as solar output decreases and demand increases.
