Cylib, a German battery recycling startup, and Vianode, a Norwegian battery materials company, have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on graphite recycling. Their joint goal is to process and qualify graphite recovered from spent EV batteries for use in next-generation battery cells.
Why graphite matters for the EV supply chain
Graphite is a critical component of lithium-ion battery anodes and is classified as a critical raw material by the European Union. Currently, the vast majority of battery-grade graphite is sourced from China, creating a significant supply-chain vulnerability for European EV and battery manufacturers as demand accelerates.
The Cylib–Vianode collaboration aims to demonstrate that recycled graphite can meet the quality standards required for premium battery applications — effectively reducing dependence on virgin material imports. From MOU to closed loop
The signed letter of intent marks the beginning of a testing and qualification phase, after which the partners will assess whether recycled graphite can be reintegrated into industrial-scale cell production.
