Rheem Refreshes ProTerra Heat Pump Water Heater Line

Rheem, a major US-based water heating manufacturer, has unveiled a refreshed version of its ProTerra heat pump water heater (HPWH) line, as detailed in a manufacturer interview published by CleanTechnica. Heat pump water heaters work by extracting heat from ambient air and transferring it to the water tank, achieving efficiencies up to three times higher than conventional electric resistance heaters.

The updated ProTerra models retain the core technology that has made HPWHs increasingly popular in North America and Europe, while adding refined smart-home connectivity features. Users can schedule heating cycles to coincide with off-peak electricity tariffs or periods of high solar generation, making the device an ideal companion for rooftop PV systems.

From an EU perspective, heat pump water heaters are gaining regulatory momentum under the Energy Efficiency Directive and the REPowerEU agenda, which push member states to phase out fossil fuel-based water heating. Countries like Germany, Austria, and France have introduced subsidy schemes that make HPWHs financially attractive — payback periods of 3–6 years are increasingly common when replacing old gas boilers.

Rheem's product is currently sold primarily in the North American market, but the technology it employs is universal. European brands such as Stiebel Eltron, Vaillant, and Daikin offer similar HPWH solutions across the EU. The broader takeaway from Rheem's refresh is that heat pump water heating is maturing rapidly, with better user interfaces, higher efficiency ratings, and tighter grid integration becoming the new baseline.
